Let me just start by saying that I am not great at doing daily challenges or I should say – after hours or pondering and planning I don’t always have anything interesting to photograph at the end of each day.
That is why I decided to take part in the #the100dayproject this year as I felt it’s purpose was for a larger goal than daily photos.
What is #the100dayproject about?
The best way to explain it is to let the project speak for itself. “#The100DayProject is a free art project that takes place online. Every spring, thousands of people all around the world commit to 100 days of exploring their creativity.
Anyone can join (yes, that means you!). The idea is simple: choose a project, do it every day for 100 days, and share your process on Instagram with the hashtag #The100DayProject.”

I really liked the idea of having a project to focus on and work on throughout the 100 days. I haven’t felt the pressure to post every day but have been reminded to work on my project anyway.
What was my goal and why did I choose it?
My goal was to move away from Adobe Creative Cloud and try out alternative software. For someone that has been using Adobe products in some form or another since 1985 I knew this would be very difficult. I chose what I am calling the ‘Affinity trinity’ and I decided to use #the100daychallenge to push me to do it.

There is a long list of things that I love about using Adobe CC but in recent times I have come to feel that their subscription is no longer cost-effective for me. I had a lot of down-time with my iMac during my last subscription year due to two faulty power supplies and realised that the ‘cancel anytime’ offer wasn’t a great idea after all so kept it going.
The big question for me was – would I be able to bring myself to cancel it in May 2019? This is where the challenge comes in.

In order to make myself accountable I divided this project up into 10 tasks.

What have I achieved so far on the challenge?
As I write this post the challenge is now on Day 82 and while I haven’t posted on Instagram many times I have achieved what I set out to do.
I now own all three pieces of software
After taking part in the trial of both Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer I bought the full versions during the Spring sale and got 20% off each one.
The Affinity Publisher Beta has now finished and I managed to get the full package at a reduced price due to being on the Beta. I placed my pre-order this week and got 30% off and a free font pack.
I cancelled my Creative Cloud membership
I managed to resist the ‘please stay’ reduced-price temptation as I wanted to complete my challenge but had a slight panic when I got this email……..
I have created new templates and some new designs
I watched some tutorials and recreated some of my most-used templates. For my more complicated templates I found tips and advice on the Affinity forums. Help was usually only a google search away.
In doing this I have learnt how to use many of the Affinity tools. I have discovered that Affinity software is not a clone of Adobe Creative Cloud. They like to do things their own way. This can be both an inspiration and a time-sink as I had to relearn some processes from scratch. It’s ok though as I’d rather use innovative software than a copy.
I always get inspiration from making new designs so to break up the monotony I made some new business cards and sticker designs. They were all well-received on social media and I always feel this is the push I need to keep going.
All in all I have managed to achieve all 10 tasks, with this blog post being the 10th one. I will continue to loop back through tasks 7-10 from here in.
I managed to do all this and reorganise my studio space. I bought new shelves to organise my paper, card and stickers and found some fabulous letter trays to fit them into. I will write a blog post about these finds soon.
Would I take part again next year and if so why?
I would definitely take part in the project again next year. I found it gave me the motivation to set a goal and work towards it without any pressure to do things that take me away from my own plan.
Next time I would increase my task list from 10 to 25 so I would have to complete something every 4 days that I could share on social media. I knew this year would be more about the work in the background, laying the foundation for the work that is to come and I’m happy with that but I’d like to pick up the pace next time.
